History
The UK is packed with buildings and items of great historical interest. This tiny island nation, which once ruled the seas and had an empire stretching across the globe, has had a rich history thanks to the many ethnic invasions occurring over many thousands of years. Led by Julius Caesar, the Romans invaded Britain two millennia ago, and centuries later it was the Vikings (originating from Scandanavia in Europe’s north) turn to conquer. As a result, the base ethnic grouping of the English people today may be traced to the Anglo-Saxons, from whom we have the English language today, combined with the influence of the northern Europeans (whose influence is unmistakeable owing to the many fair-haired, blue-eyed British and the many new expressions which entered the English language).
Today, Great Britain - or to give it its official name, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
